History of Park Elementary

Park Elementary, originally established as Albert Pike Elementary in 1921, was the result of the Fort Smith School Board's decision to abandon the aging Rocky Ridge School on the eastern edge of the city. The new school was built near the intersection of Park Avenue and Albert Pike Avenue, offering a four-room facility with modest amenities such as a water well, outdoor toilets, and electric lights. The school was commonly referred to by its nickname "the little country school,” due to its rural location and simple appearance.  Despite these humble beginnings, the school quickly became an essential institution in the area, The school’s early years were marked by a community-driven spirit, as the school served not only the students but also the surrounding community.

In 2020, the school’s name was changed to Park Elementary during a school board meeting.. This decision was made in response to the controversial legacy of its original namesake, and reflected the district's commitment to inclusivity and respect for all students. The renaming of the school honored its location and symbolized a shift toward fostering a more respectful and inclusive environment.

Over the years, Park Elementary has experienced significant growth and transformation—from its humble four-room beginnings to the modern facilities of today. The school has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of Fort Smith, all while maintaining a strong connection to its rich history.

Major Milestones in Park's History

1921

Albert Pike Elementary opened with four classrooms and basic facilities under the leadership of the first principal, C.E. Beard.

1922

Mrs. Ida Huff succeeded C.E. Beard as principal, taking on both administrative and teaching duties for the next decade.

The school faced overcrowding, prompting the transfer of 52 students to Rogers and Peabody schools.  Despite requests for additional classrooms, they were not granted.

Spring 1927

The Great Flood of 1927 caused the collapse of levees between Fort Smith and Little Rock, damaging the city's water supply. The school’s well served as a crucial resource for the community throughout months of water contamination.

1932

The school celebrated its first graduating class, with 16 sixth-grade students completing their studies.

1934

A lean-to structure and a cafeteria were added. The cafeteria, initially funded by relief efforts, provided meals for students in need. Total enrollment reached 144 students.

A temporary kitchen and serving room were constructed to accommodate the growing cafeteria needs.

A fire caused significant damage, leading to temporary relocations while the building was repaired. Plans for a new structure were set in motion. The new building was begun and was completed in 1950. The old building became the Joseph M. Hill School and later part of Albert Pike again.

1950

The new Albert Pike building opened. The eight-room masonry building contained an auditorium, a gymnasium, and a cafeteria -  providing much needed space for the growing student population.

1955

An expansion increased the number of classrooms to 14, further accommodating the school’s increasing enrollment.
